MAUD DELAFLOTTE
A bear in the mountain
Pyrénée, France
In the Ariège, shepherds are increasing suffering the economic effects of bear attacks on their flocks. Life in some mountain summer pastures has become particularly stressful.
The difficult coexistence between shepherds and bears now divides people in the Pyrenees and again raises this question about how humans beings can share habitats with wild animals. On one side, there are the farmers with their ancestral know-how, and on the other, a European directive intended to improve biodiversity, in this case by reintroducing bears to the region. Different worlds, who do not share the same realities, are competing for the same space.
